Can an Umbilical Hernia Be Repaired During a Tummy Tuck?
Throughout the course of one’s pregnancy, the belly grows and the abdominal muscles can be stretched to the point of separating, a condition known as diastasis recti. When this occurs, a woman is more prone to developing an umbilical hernia (or navel hernia). This type of hernia means the intestines begin to protrude through a weak point in the abdominal muscle wall, typically at the belly button. While an umbilical hernia isn’t necessarily dangerous on its own, the problem can lead to life-threatening problems if not treated.
Some of the risk factors for developing an umbilical hernia are women who have undergone multiple pregnancies and those who are obese. As a result, it is not uncommon for hernia repair to be performed in conjunction with tummy tuck surgery. Also known as abdominoplasty, this procedure is designed to remove excess skin in the abdominal region, and it can also involve correcting stretched or torn abdominal muscles and repairing an umbilical hernia. Your plastic surgeon may perform both parts or may have a general surgeon assist with the umbilical hernia, while they focus on the specialized nature of the tummy tuck.
